The Erosion of Global Cooperation and the Rise of Authoritarianism: A Threat to World Peace

Buchanan 2025

The fate of humanity is not determined by the triumph of power, but by the triumph of empathy; for it is in the depths of our shared humanity that we find the strength to overcome the darkness of our differences, to forge a world where the pursuit of peace, justice and freedom is not a distant dream, but a living reality -

Abstract

The world is facing a crisis of global cooperation and a rise in authoritarianism, which threatens to undermine the foundations of international peace and stability. This paper examines the current state of global affairs, including the decline of liberal democratic values, the rise of nationalist and authoritarian ideologies, and the erosion of international institutions. I discuss the implications of these trends for global peace, stability and argue that a fundamental transformation in the way that nations interact with each other is necessary to address these challenges.

Introduction

The world is at a crossroads. The decline of liberal democratic values and the rise of nationalist and authoritarian ideologies have created a toxic environment for global cooperation and peace. The expansion of the BRICS nations, including the addition of Venezuela and Egypt, has further complicated the global landscape. The United States, under the leadership of President Trump, pursuing business like support power tyrants like Elon Musk are pursuing a unilateral and isolationist approach to foreign policy, which has led to a decline in global cooperation, trust and an increase in tensions with other nations. Some nations see this as a lucrative way to implement and justify cutbacks and privatisation of critical services in the name of profit and supposed economic prosperity. Retrospectively falling into the relentless growth game that multinational corporations at critical mass are playing. The game of politics is diversly opposed to corporate business development.

The Decline of Liberal Democratic Value

The decline of liberal democratic values is a significant factor in the erosion of global cooperation. The rise of authoritarian and nationalist ideologies has led to a decline in the rule of law, human rights specifically and democratic institutions. Leading to the rejection or denial of diversity and equality. This has created an environment in which nations are more likely to pursue their own interests at the expense of others, rather than working together to address common challenges. Like endemic biodiversity, human diversity and most importantly national water security which intertwines climatology and global desertification. Ultimately leading to more corporate benefits and growth strategies.

The Rise of Authoritarianism

The rise of authoritarianism has been a significant factor in the erosion of global cooperation. Nations such as Russia, China, Iran, Noth Korea and Turkey have pursued authoritarian policies, which have led to a decline in human rights, democratic institutions, and the rule of law. The expansion of the BRICS nations has further complicated the global landscape, as these nations have often pursued authoritarian and nationalist policies.

The Erosion of International Institutions

The erosion of international institutions has been a significant factor in the decline of global cooperation. The United Nations, which was established to promote peace and security, has been unable to effectively address the challenges facing the world. The decline of the UN has been driven by a combination of factors, including the rise of nationalist and authoritarian ideologies, and the pursuit of unilateral and isolationist policies by nations such as the United States.

The Implications for Global Peace and Stability

The implications of these trends for global peace and stability are significant. The decline of liberal democratic values, the rise of authoritarianism, and the erosion of international institutions have created an environment in which nations are more likely to pursue their own interests at the expense of others. This has led to an increase in tensions between nations, and a decline in global cooperation.

Conclusion

The world is facing a crisis of global cooperation and a rise in authoritarianism, which threatens to undermine the foundations of international peace and stability. A fundamental transformation in the way that nations interact with each other is necessary to address these challenges. This will require a commitment to liberal democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law, as well as a willingness to work together to address common challenges.
